The short version: Revision3 uses BitTorrent to distribute their media. Media Defender, who’s mission is to disrupt illegal peer-to-peer networks, were using a back door into Revision3′s BitTorrent server to inject torrents into their tracking server. Revision3 noticed the unauthorized torrents and took measures to de-authorize those torrents. This is where things become a bit sticky. Apparently because Media Defender’s servers were no longer receiving replies from Revision3′s tracking server, “traffic piled up”, according to Media Defender. The effect of this: Revision3 was hit with 8,000 packets per second sourced from Media Defender. Was it: intentional, malicious, down-right-dirty? I think so. The FBI is investigating and it is my hope that the FBI and Revision3 will take the appropriate steps to ensure Media Defender ceases their operations.
